Directions
Have the group split into pairs. One person in the pair will give directions and the other will
follow. Each pair should have one pair of shoes with laces. The individual giving directions is
responsible for teaching his or her partner how to tie a bow. The individual receiving
directions must follow his or her partnerâs directions exactly as they are stated, acting as if this
is a completely new concept. For example, if a participant asks his or her partner to make a
loop with the right show lace, the partner can respond by stating that he or she does not
know how to make a loop or by making a loop that is inappropriately sized. This activity
reminds participants that people, especially children, require specific directions and
guidelines in order to be successful.

Directions
This activity is a good one to follow Name Juggling.

Start by asking the group to stand in a circle and throw the ball back and forth from person to person so that everyone in the group gets it at least once, and it ends up back at the first person. For more info, see Name Juggling. Without telling the group, time the activity. Once the activity is complete, tell the group the time in which they completed it.

Then explain: "We are now going to see how quickly we can send this one ball from start to finish through the system. The only rule is that the ball must pass through the system in the same order that we have already established. (IMPORTANT: how you frame this rule will define the boundaries for how this task can be accomplished.) I will start time as soon as the ball leaves the first person, and I will stop time when it returns to him/her. You may begin when ready." Time their first attempt. Applaud their attempt, whatever it is (one second per participant or longer is quite normal). And prompt them with "you can do better." Allow for planning, additional attempts and more planning. At some point the group will ask you how fast this can be done or how fast you've seen it done or what the ultimate goal is. Answer for most groups of 20 people or less - less than one second. Continue until the group attains the elusive "warp speed" or ceases to be actively engaged in trying to reach it.

Facilitator Notes
Once the group learns of the goal (of less than 1 second), expect responses like "no way" and "are you kidding?" This will however alert them to the fact that the whole system needs to fundamentally change. Don't reveal this goal too early.

Fundamental changes that the group might progress through include movement (e.g. moving closer together, changing the position of the participants in the circle, moving out of a circle to a line or some other shape), changing how the ball moves through the system (e.g. from a toss to a hand off to a roll across hands or along the ground).

How creatively you allow the group to interpret its objective and the stipulation is a function of your assessment of the group and your learning goals. Groups sometimes ask if they can just put the ball on the ground and then touch it in succession, does this satisfy the objective? [Does it? Pause here and reflect ...] A good response in this case is usually to ask the group to answer its own question. Does the ball actually pass through the system in the correct order? Most groups usually choose to continue to seek another solution, and it is good to encourage their creative thinking even if it didn't exactly provide the solution - it shows movement in the right direction.
Every participant receives 1 handkerchief that goes in the right pants pocket or tucked into the
right side of the pants. The object of the game is to collect as many tiger tails (handkerchiefs) as possible while protecting your own. Once a tail has been taken, that participant is frozen to the ground. While frozen, participants can continue to grab tiger tails without moving their feet. The person with the most tails wins the game. Repeat several times and then ask the group to split into partners. One partner places his or her tiger tail on the left and the other on the right. The pair is active until both tails have been taken, at which time they are frozen to the ground.
222.190.96.195https://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Teampedia:General_disclaimer&diff=2236Teampedia:General disclaimer2008-01-06T10:30:54Z
222.190.96.195: allaacelace

Directions
Stand in a circle. Go around the circle and have everyone share names, one at a time. Let
participants know that its OK to ask someone elseâs name if you donât remember. Start with
one object, like a koosh ball. Explain: "I'm going to start by tossing this ball to someone else in
the circle. If you receive it, toss it to someone else in the circle not immediately on either side
of you. That person will toss it to another person who has not yet received it and again not
immediately on either side of him or her. Throwing continues until the last person tosses the
ball back to me. Remember who you tossed to because we will try to recreate the pattern in
the next phase. Any questions?" This is a good point to encourage people to wait until the
person you call looks you in the eye to throw the ball. When the person catches the ball, he
or she thanks the person by name who threw the ball and then states a name and throws to
a new person. Set a pattern so that each person in the circle throws and receives the ball
one time. Explain: "Now we are going to try to repeat the process, but we are going to see
how many balls we can keep up in the air at any one time. Any questions?" Once any
questions have been answered, toss the ball to the first person. As soon as they toss the ball,
grab another one from your stash and toss it. Repeat until a) there is exactly the number of
balls going as there are participants (an almost Herculean task) or b) the process begins to
break down. Notice how many balls the group has going, and retrieve them as they come
back to you.
Inform the group as to how many balls they had in the air when they were doing their best.
Ask the group to consider how they might improve their performance. Typical modifications
allow for participants to move their position, make agreements as to how they will throw to
each other (e.g., "I'll toss mine to you high" or "I'll roll mine across the floor"), agree to pause
the process when one ball goes awry, etc. Begin the process again.
222.190.96.195https://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Life_Map&diff=2234Life Map2008-01-06T10:30:25Z
222.190.96.195: oueltb

The participant in the center of the circle, or caller, announces "The North Wind blows for anyone who"...followed by a particular characteristic that the caller shares. Ex: "The North Wind blows on anyone who has more than one sibling" A personal favorite of mine is "The North Wind blows on anyone who has played this game in a language aside from English". Everyone to whom that characteristic applies then runs into the circle and switches places with someone else from the circle who also shares that characteristic. The caller must also find a place in the circle, and whoever is left without a place becomes the new caller. It's very easy for this game to become mundane (eg, TNWB for anyone who's wearing jeans, has glasses, etc.) so encourage participants to be creative and unique.
If anyone touches the strings or knocks the web while passing through the holes the whole team has to go back and start over again. If you have a large group you can set up two or more webs, break the group down into smaller groups and have groups race to see who can finish first.
222.190.96.195https://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Helium_Stick&diff=2220Helium Stick2008-01-06T10:05:57Z
222.190.96.195: varpasel

Set Up
None

Directions
Line up team in two rows which face each other. Introduce the Helium Stick - a long, thin,
light rod. Ask participants to point their index fingers and hold their arms out. Lay the Helium
Stick down on their fingers. Before you let go, get the group to adjust their finger heights until the Helium Stick is
horizontal and everyone's index fingers are touching the stick.
Explain that the challenge is to lower the Helium Stick to the ground.
The catch: Each person's fingers must be in contact with the Helium Stick at all times. Pinching or grabbing the
pole in not allowed - it must rest on top of fingers.

Reiterate to the group that if anyone's finger is caught not touching the Helium Stick, the task will be restarted.
Let the task begin....

Warning: Particularly in the early stages, the Helium Stick has a habit of mysteriously float up
rather than coming down, causing much laughter. A bit of clever humoring can help - e.g.,
act surprised and ask what are they doing raising the Helium Stick instead of lowering it!

For added drama, jump up and pull it down! Participants may be confused initially about the
paradoxical behavior of the Helium Stick. The secret (keep it to yourself) is that the collective
upwards pressure tends to be greater than the weight of the stick. Often the more a group
tries, the more it floats. Some groups or individuals (most often larger size groups) after 5 to
10 minutes of trying may be inclined to give up, believing it not to be possible or that it is too
hard. The facilitator can offer direct suggestions or suggest the group stops the task,
discusses their strategy, and then has another go.

Less often, a group may appear to be succeeding too fast. In response, be particularly
vigilant about fingers not touching the pole. Also make sure participants lower the pole all
the way onto the ground. You can add further difficulty by adding a large washer to each
end of the stick and explain that the washers should not fall off during the exercise, otherwise
its a restart. Eventually the group needs to calm down, concentrate, and very slowly,
patiently lower the Helium Stick - easier said than done.

Variations
Use Hula-hoop instead of stick
Participants stand in a circle with one person in the center. The physical skills necessary for
spotting are simple â ask participants in the outer circle to develop a firm, flexible stance by placing one foot in front and one foot behind with feet about shoulder-width apart.
Members of the circle place hands up at shoulder height with the person in center in
catching position. The person in the middle then has 3 opportunities to âfallâ towards
members of the circle. The person in the center starts the activity by stating âspotters readyâ, members of the circle respond âreadyâ. Center person says âfallingâ and waits for outside circle to respond with âfall onâ. If the person in the center is confident, he or she can ask the group members to take a step back, creating a larger circle and greater distance between the faller and the spotters. Regardless of direction, everyone should go to catch.
Draw a line in the center of the space to split the space into a center space (with enough room for the group to run around) and then draw a line on each end for a safety zones.

Directions
* Split the group into 2 teams and explain the directions and show the actions.

*Each team huddles and picks a character for the round choosing between giants, wizards or elfs. The team must agree on a character and everyone on the team must act out the same character for that round.

* Each character has an action:
** Giants put their hands up over their heads (to make them look taller),
** Wizards put their hands out straight in front of them wiggling their fingers (as if they are casting a spell)
** Elfs make pointy ears on their head with their pointer fingers and bend their knees (to make them look smaller).

* And each character beats one other character:
** Giants beat Elves
** Elves beat Wizards
** Wizards beat Giants.
** If both team picks the same character it is a draw.

* Once each team has decided what character they will be for that round, the teams come up to the center and line up face to face. * On the count of 3, everyone does the action their team character.
* The team whose characters win that round chase the other team, trying to tag as many members on the other team as possible before they reach the safety zone. e.g. if team one picks giants and team 2 picks elves, team one chases team 2 and tries to tag as many of the elves as they can before they reach the safety zone.
* Members from the team that are tagged become part of the winning team, so one group grows and the other group shrinks.
* You then repeat the process, giving the new teams a minute to decide what character they want to be, and then call them back to the middle to begin again.
* The game ends when one team has completely absorbed the other team, or when you run out of time.
222.190.96.195https://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Three_Questions&diff=2214Three Questions2008-01-06T10:02:52Z
222.190.96.195: trcac4telboc

* 1 chair for each person (or other placemarker such as a post-it note)

Setup
* Chairs are arranged in a circle with participants sitting in the chairs
* If facilitator is going to participate s/he starts in the middle
* If facilitator is not participating, than s/he invites one volunteer to stand in the middle removing the volunteer's chair from the circle

Directions
One participant stands in the middle and says "The wind blows for...(insert statement that applies to participant here)" and then everyone to whom that statement applies gets up and tries to find an empty chair. Participants may not move to a chair right next to the one they were just sitting in. Since everyone (including the person in the middle) is looking for a new chair, one person will be left with out a chair... and that person becomes the one in the middle. It is best to start off with a statement that will get everyone to move.

Example statements: The Wind Blows for anyone...
* who brushed their teeth this morning
* whose parents are divorced
* who took the bus to get here
* etc.

Alternatives
If you want to do this outside (or any area where don't have chairs) you can use other place markers. For example hand out post-it notes and have everyone in the circle mark their spot with the note before you begin. Just be careful that people don't step on each others' toes while racing for the open spots!
222.190.96.195https://www.teampedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Birthday_Lineup&diff=2205Birthday Lineup2008-01-06T09:35:02Z
222.190.96.195: bocouaccn

Everyone stands in a circle. The leader of this game is called "Big Buddy" The others, going clockwise, are
numbered: 1, 2, 3 and so on. Big Buddy establishes a 4-beat clapping rhythm, saying "Big Buddy, Big Buddy, Big Buddy (followed by a rest) - repeat this until everyone got the rhythm. Each round begins with this rhythm.

The game then goes as follows: Big Buddy passes the buck to someone else, saying Big Buddy followed by a number, Number 7 for example. This takes 2 beats, one for saying "Big Buddy" and one for saying "Number 7."

Person Number 7 then passes in 2 beats to Number 4 for example, saying âNumber 7 Number 4â. It then continues until someone makes a mistake or messes up the rhythm: if and when that happens everyone says (in 2 beats) âOh Snapâ, after which they repeat Big Buddy Big Buddy Big Buddy (+ rest on 4th beat). After that, the player that made the mistake goes to the end of the circle, immediately right of Big Buddy and becomes the highest number. This also changes the number of all participants that were after that person in the circle. The goal of the game is to become the Big Buddy by working your way to Number 1. Participants can also try to make Big Buddy mess up ("Big Buddy" can be used in place of a number in the calling sequence).

Directions
* Choose one person to be 'It' and one person to be free. The rest of the group should pair up, link arms and scatter in their

pairs around a playing field/area.
* The object of the game is for person who is "it" to tag the person who is "free."
* The people paired up around the field are to stand still until the person who is free links arms with either member of a pair. When this happens, the person on the other side of the pair, is now the one who is "free" and must run away from the person who is "it."
222.190.96.195
