This activity really is very effective and a lot of fun for all the groups. We had  competing groups trying to lower the stick. From the beginning is was obvious that this is no easy task and groups need to work together very well to lower the stick properly. We had all groups try to lower it first, after that we put all groups besides each other and made it into a competition. To lower the stick is not easy as a group, they really need to practice it to get the hang of it. In our case we used PVC pipes as sticks, very cheap and worked very well.
